Malingering is defined by the American Phychiatric Association(2000) as "the intentional production of false or grossly exaggreted physical or psychological sympotoms, motivated by external incentives."
"This extrnal gain may take the form of financial rewards, relief of responsibilities at a job or at home, avoiding military service, or evading criminal responsibility(American Psychiatric Association, 2000)
The definition was carefully constructed to avoid labeling as malingteres those who are prone to mild exaggerations with no intent to deceive(Wiley, 1998)

Malingering can be further categorized into
(1)pure malingering
(2)partial malingering
(3)false imputation

When an individual feigns a dsiorder that does not exist at all, this. is refered to as pure malingering.
