[from effero: to bury, to carry to the grave] A term coined to describe the orderly and regulated and usually highly efficient removal by phagocytosis of apoptotic cells from tissues by professional phagocytes such as macrophages or dendritic cells (deCathelineau and Henson, 2003). This process occurs throughout the lifespan of an organism as part of normal development during embryogenesis, during tissue maintenance, and during the resolution of inflammation and requires the activities of a variety of genes (Liu et al, 2006)).
